Strasburg Detail

Yesterday my daughter and I made a trip up to Strasburg Railroad to work on an abstract project she has for college. She’s working with film and then developing it herself in the darkroom. She has a great eye and does a fantastic job and I’m excited about seeing what she captured!

    Creek Rhythm

It’s a busy time of year for me but I took a short break and hustled down to the creek to make a few images. Ed Harding and I were chatting about what to do on a rainy morning yesterday and I suggested shooting a few creeks images. Well I took my advice and made a couple that I really liked. The creek was really rushing and muddy so it made me a bit nervous walking out in it with my gear. So I only ventured out a little from the edge. I love the visual rhythm here…

    Chambers Lake

Yesterday we had a great cloud day and I wanted to take advantage of it. A couple hours before sunset I headed over to Chambers Lake with hopes of capturing some of the magic and as luck would have it, I was on the wrong side of the lake to see the colors. Oh well, what’s the old saying, “when handed lemons make lemonade”. This is a 20 image vertical HDR. I panned the camera to four different angles with five shots at each. I then processed it with Photomatix and tweaked it in CS4. I love the results…

    Zinnia Bud

With fall quickly approaching, I wanted to capture this Zinnia bud before it disappeared. I love the 3-D look and feel of this! I made this image with my Tamron 180mm macro lens at f/8. I had to wait for the wind to slow up to be able to pull this 1/30 sec exposure off.

    Saturday's Outing

This past Saturday, friend and fellow photographer, Nick Dibernardo and I went out for a barn raising. Nick found out about it and included me and of course, I jumped at the chance. We arrived only to find that they were not working on the barn. Oh well we had a productive outing just the same.

    Sunrise Farm

Here’s the first image I made from my Friday morning outing. Kelly & I stopped along an Amish lane that was facing east and watched in awe as the colors in the sky intensified. Here I shot a five image HDR pulling the sky and dark foreground within the cameras range of capture. I’ve been shooting HDR’s since 2006, certainly not the first but much longer than many. The reason many of us shoot HDR’s is because the camera can record approx 6 stops of light and the human eye can see approx 12-15 stops. With HDR’s it allows us to record what the eye is seeing. My goal is to have the image look as close to natural as possible. I’m sure the over the top look has it place, but I am not a fan of gaudy fake looking HDR work… (but then, that’s just me!)

    Conowingo Dam Reflection

Luis Morales organized a club outing to the Conowingo Dam this morning and as always it was great to see everybody! The area is well known for its Eagle population but today I only saw a few young birds. I personally didn’t shoot any Eagles but I did make this outstanding reflection of the Dam. While we stood around talking, I noticed the light was getting better and better and although we weren’t allowed to photograph the dam I could resist this shot.

    Amish Farm Pano

Friday morning Kelly and I spent an incredible sunrise out shooting the Amish countryside. We focused on the farms and fields and we had amazing light. I’m saving my favorite shot from the outing for my “Image of the Week”. I've always shot my fair share of panoramic, especially when the composition tends to ask for it!
This is a 7 image vertical pano stitched with Autopano Pro and processed it with Nik’s Silver Effects Pro, I just loved the feel of it in a B&W.

    Full Moon Outing

Last night I organized a group outing to shoot the full moon and we had a blast. About twenty people showed up and I hope they went home with at least a few nice images! This close up is my favorite. In addition, we celebrated Josh’s 15th birthday, Jose’s son! Many thanks for bringing the group cupcakes Jose!

    Full Moon Fever

Tonight I invited a group of students and workshop clients to shoot the full moon with me at Marsh Creek. I have found that shooting the full moon is best achieved the day before it’s actually full. The weather is forecasting a clear night and hopefully we will all get some nice images!

    Barn & Tobacco

This is certainly the harvest season for the Amish and I’m trying my best to get out and capture as much of it as I can. This evening I visited a local farm and the owner was kind enough to let me photograph his barn with the tobacco hanging. The sun was low in the sky helping to add a warm glow to the image. As soon as I finish processing I will be adding a few more to my blog.
