2011 - A Year in Review

Happy New Year Everyone,

As the year comes to a close I would like to look back on what an exceptional year it's been! This has been one of my best years from many standpoints. I strengthened my relationship with my amazing sponsors. Honestly, they have all been great but to mention a few of my main stream sponsors, I would like to thank Tamron, Lowepro and Nik Software for their amazing support this year. I was also very honored to have been invited to join the Lowepro Professional Photographers Showcase.

I've had the opportunity to work with so many outstanding clients and stood before so many beautiful places I am truly thankful!

This tutorial will show how to add one person multiple times in an image and is tailored to the Photoshop CS3/4 or 5 user. Let me start out by laying some ground work. First of all you need your camera set on a tripod and then have your subject move to different locations in each separate image. You can do this as many times as you would like combining the images with Photoshop.

Smallwoods

This is the remains of Smallwoods nursery. Back when I first moved here they use to sell wholesale roses to the public and each week I would go over and buy a dozen of longstems. It seems like a lot but they only charged $6 dollars a dozen. They have since closed the nursery and tore down the greenhouses leaving an old building and smoke stack.

Greetings All,

As many of you know I just got back from leading a week long photo tour in the Grand Tetons. Now I'm sitting in the Chicago airport waiting on a connection to Seattle where I'm lecturing for Tamron on Composition and Light at the 4C's camera convention. Next week I'll be in southern West Virginia for my Babcock photo tour which is going to be a blast. In fact I have a photo gig every weekend till mid November which is good for business.
I also wanted to mention that Kelly & I have our new 2012 photo workshops and tours on-line and we hope to see you at one!

New River Gorge Bridge

Hello Everyone,

As many of you know I made a trip down to the New River Gorge area this past weekend. It seems that I spent much of my weekend in the car running to different locations and finding just that special spot. When you have an area as big as the New River Gorge, it's hard to be in the right spot at the right time in the right light all of the time, so I got several nice shots each day in different locations. This shot of the train and New River Gorge bridge fit perfect as a nice black and white image.

Upon arrival yesterday we were greeted by the coordinators of NECCC, Antoinette and Susan and a great support cast that is making sure everything runs smoothly. Tucquan Glen

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to share an image that I made a few weeks ago. My friend Michael Lawrence gave me a heads-up to the timing of the rhododendron blooms so Kelly and I took a trip over to Tucquan Glen to shoot. This was my first time capturing the blooms at Tucquan and it really was a magical place there in the gorge. We had soft even light which was perfect.

Horseshoe Crabs

Hello Everyone,
WOW is it a scorcher today! The temps just hit 96 degrees :~(

On the new moon last week Zach and I made a run down to the Delaware beach with hopes of capturing the horseshoe crabs spawning. There were a few around but not what I was hoping for. It’s a hit or miss thing and I was told that Monday was amazing. Of course I didn’t go Monday I went on Thursday Maybe I’ll have better luck next year!

This image is a good example of the skies we had at my “Springtime in the Smokies” photo tour. It was truly breathtaking! This is a two image HDR, one exposure for the sky and another for the foreground and processed with Nik’s HDR Efex Pro. I left the foreground a little dark to express the mood of the evening :~)

Blue Bells – Helicon Focus

Happy Monday,
Before I start tearing into my images from the Smokies, I wanted to share this image I made using Helicon Focus.
Here’s a brief overview of the workflow for Helicon Focus:

Find you subject (goes without saying)
After finding your composition attach your camera to your tripod
Switch your camera to manual focus
Without moving your camera take multiple shots at different focus points starting from the front and working your way towards the back of the subject. (that’s how I do it)

Then when you download your images to the computer and load your images into Helicon (this is where the magic of the Helicon Software shines) It will stack all of your multiple focused images into one final exceptionally sharp focused image.

Morning Reflections

Good morning Folks,
This morning I woke up early (normal for me) and made my ritual visit to the back deck to check out the sky. I do this every morning and watch the sky for cloud cover and colors. No photo plans for today just hanging around the house getting a few chores done and working in the yard. Before starting things I decided to have my coffee in the garden and made a small fire in the Chimenea (sp). I do this quite often in the evening but mornings fires don't happen a lot. As luck would have it (not out with my camera) we had a glorious sunrise with amazing clouds.
I hope you have a great day and sorry for my ramblings this morning.

P.S. Made a visit to Longwood yesterday and the tulips are gorgeous!

Happy Friday Everyone,
I think this was the only Trillium open during my visit to Shenk's Ferry last weekend (lol). This is a composite of four images focused at different spots on the flower using a wide open aperture (f2.8) then combined using Helicon Focus. If I had shot this with a closed down aperture (f/22 or so) the background would have been a additional subject creating a competing element in my image!

TIDBIT: The white trillium serves as the emblem and official flower of the Canadian province of Ontario.area.

Macro & Why?

Good Morning,

Now that spring has sprung I’m seeing tons of flower images being posted to various blogs and social networks. One thing you don’t see often is the how and why to use certain setting. Every Spring I used to teach a six week macro class helping people jump start their flower photography. The least understood aspect of macro / flower photography is when should I use a wide open aperture and when do I want more depth of field? It’s certainly a valid question and one that I am going to touch on in this blog post.

First off you need to evaluate your subject and what’s around it (backgrounds). And when I say this you have to determine how “you as the photographer” want to present this as a final image. There are many factor that will help you to determine this. Will I fill the frame or should I isolated it against a soft blurry background. Once you determine your presentation you need to work on your execution.

Let’s use these two images as an example! First of all, many orchids grow in clusters or groups making it tough to get a clean single orchid against a nice soft background. So I have decided to fill the frame with just one orchid. Now that I have my composition in mind, I need to determine what aperture or depth of field that I want. Here I wanted as much DOF as I could possibly pull off with a single frame. (I’m not going to jump into using multiple focal point and then using Helicon Focus to stitch in this post, I’ll save that for another time).

So, by filling the frame I’ve eliminated any distracting backgrounds therefore allowing me to shoot at a very high aperture, f/38. This will give me the maximum DOF for my subject. Keep in mind that with landscape photography, DOF is measured in feet and with Macro/Close-up it’s measured in inches and even fractions of an inch. F/38 maybe overkill in the landscape world but in the macro realm it still may not be enough!

With spring upon us it’s funny how our photographic vision changes. We are in the “in-between” phase from a winter to spring transition. Not enough spring buds or greens to capture in the trees so we are drawn to the colorful pallet of early blooming flowers. It’s the cycle of the seasons that draws us to continually create something different.

Seneca Rocks

Hello Everyone,
Here’s an image for my friend Scott Grimes. He’s an avid climber and every time I tell him I was in West Virginia he tells me to check out the Seneca Rocks area. On my last visit to Seneca Rocks it was very overcast and moody only showing glimpses of the peak. But this visit was beautiful and the temps touched the 70 degree mark. I know it’s hard from this small image but when expanded to full size you can see several climbers making their way to the peak.

Hello Everyone,
The week is winding down and here lately I’ve been going through my image library looking at the images that didn’t make the blog list. Over the next few day’s I’ll be adding some of the on the border images.

As most of you know I use Nik (the complete line of their filters) for all of my image processing but on occasion I like to add a little creative spin on things with Topaz’s Simplify. I ‘m going to guess I’m one of the original “BUZZ” user from way back. When I say this I mean I was using the BUZZ or Simplify filter back when it was first introduced by Fo2pix which has since went out of business.

Winding Glen Meadow–Pano

I’ve haven't had a chance to get out as mush as I would like here lately. I’ve been spending a lot of time marketing /office work and last week I had a workshop with no shooting at all.
This panoramic (from our last big snow) was made over in the meadows of Winding Glen. You really need to see this image larger as the small thumbnail just isn't doing it justice! It's a 4 image horizontal pano.

Orchid Intimacy

Good Monday morning,
Over the weekend I had an Orchid Workshop with Dan’s Camera City & Tamron and a great group of photographers. We had a outstanding time and everyone was truly a pleasure to work with! Although I didn’t get to make any of my own images I enjoyed guiding and teaching people to slow down and see your composition through the viewfinder.

This was an orchid image I made at Longwood a few weeks earlier with my Tamron 180mm macro lens!

Wolf’s Hollow

Good Morning,
Last week we were blessed with another beautiful snow, and this one was a big one. In fact, big enough to get out the snowshoes and have a little fun. I have enjoyed winter (cold and snow) as long as I can remember. Seriously, having the right outdoor clothing and equipment makes all the difference in the world!
When we arrived at Wolf’s Hollow the gates were open and a large tractor of some sort had driven down the lane but nothing was plowed. It was kind of cool because it gave me an opportunity to tryout my new FJ in snow.

Snowy Pines–Pano

Hopefully everyone has dug out from the snow that was dumped on us last night. I personally like it and the more snow we get the better. This morning I was out and about before sunrise trying to get a few images that I had pre-visualized last night.
